Fiber laser beam diameters are significantly smaller than CO2 lasers and generate twice as much power from the same amount of current. An active fiber is used to create a laser beam which is transmitted over a transport fiber optical cable to a machine cutting head.

CO2 lasers use a gas mixture to create a laser beam. High voltage in the resonator needed for precision cutting is created with help from wear-free semiconductor excitation modules.
